Frequently Asked Questions

Candles

Q: Why beeswax candles?
A: They are the longest-lasting, cleanest-burning, healthiest, and brightest candle you can buy. The light spectrum they emit is the closest to natural sunlight and is non-disruptive to your circadian rhythm. When burned, beeswax releases negative ions which attract and attach to dust, pollen and other allergens, cleaning your air. Beeswax does not emit soot or harmful smoke.

Q: Do you or can you add color or scent?
A: No way. Synthetic fragrance oils (FO's) are extremely toxic. Even essential oils are toxic when burned. Colors aren't quite as bad, but I don't use them. You'll love our candles' natural color and delicate honey scent these emit. The only product we scent is our antiqued cinnamon beeswax ornaments, which use natural cinnamon oil. These are perfectly safe as they aren't candles and therefore the oil is not burned.

Q: What kind of wick do you use?
A: Only 100% cotton. I'm a purist like that! Burning synthetic fibers is just burning plastic in your house. Yuck.

Q: Where do you get your beeswax?
A: The beeswax I use is mostly from other local beekeepers (we go through so much that I can't produce enough myself). I'm proud to know exactly where the hives were and I trust their beekeepers. I buy unfiltered wax by the thousands of pounds. In 2024 we used over 8,000 pounds. We have a labor intensive filtration process to clean the wax and turn it into perfect cosmetic grade beeswax. We also sell bulk beeswax! We sell pre-filtered blocks on the website, or contact us to purchase larger quantities or unfiltered wax for local pickup.

Q: What should I do with my leftover candle scraps?
A: Save them! You can make your own lotion bars or even more candles. Beeswax can be melted down over and over again and it never expires. See our DIY section for candle mold kits! Remember that a candle burns in a circle and with all the incredible shapes we make, there is no way to burn all of the wax.

Q: How long does each candle burn?
A: It varies. The reason we do not list approximate burn times for each of our candles is because these variables affect the burn time so much. The biggest factor is how good you are at maintaining your candle. Avoiding drafts, trimming the wick, and other candle care really does make a difference in longevity.

Q: What's so special about raw honey?
A: Most honey you'll find in the grocery store has been heated to temperatures as high as 170F, which destroys many beneficial components of the honey. Raw honey, on the other hand, has only ever gotten as hot as the hottest day while it was in the hive. The bees even work to keep the hive cool by fanning the air with their wings when the temperatures soar. As with all other food, the more local it is to you, the more benefits there will be. Local honey, for example, contains traces of the local plant pollens and eating it regularly can help with seasonal allergies. All the honey we sell is raw, unfiltered, and I can tell you exactly where it came from.

Q: How do I clean my beeswax food wraps?
A: It's so simple! If it's greasy, use warm water, soap, and a sponge or dish rag. Otherwise, rinse with cold water and you're good to go. Don't microwave them or put them in your dishwasher. They won't survive and neither will your dishwasher.

Q: Where does your meat come from?
A: All of our produce and meat come from us or from neighbors we trust who have the same quality standards that we do. We raise a limited number of animals per year and the way we raise them is of utmost importance to us. All our beef is grass-fed and grass-finished. No grain for them. Our dairy cow does get some high quality grain, because it's important for her health as she expends lots of energy to make milk. All the meat we sell was butchered in USDA-inspected shops.
